We live in a stress filled society. Unfortunately, stress is an unavoidable symptom of living. Thankfully, there are many options when considering stress relieving activities. With the cost of living constantly rising, the goal of this short blog is to help the average person identify a few cheap ideas to help relieve stress.

1. Go outside

Being outside can relieve stress for several reasons. People often experience a reduction in stress when they feel more connected with the natural world. There are also many physical health benefits from exploring nature.

2. Talk with a friend

We are social creatures. Everyone needs a good friend to talk to. Talking with someone you trust about your emotions and stressful aspects of you life can give you the chance to have your feelings validated. It also gives you the chance to get a new perspective on what is stressing you out.

3. Spend time on a hobby

There are a million hobbies to choose from. Chances are you probably already have several even if you don’t realize it. Hobbies give you the chance to escape from your life for a while. They can be extremely effective in distracting you from whatever is causing stress in your life.

4. Clean something

Environment can be a huge influence on your emotions. Many people find that their mind is often as cluttered as their living space. Taking some time out of your day to focus on completing one task in your home can give you a sense of control and accomplishment.

5. Exercise

It is a well known fact that exercise can release endorphins or “feel good chemicals” in your brain. Moving your body is also beneficial to your physical health for many reasons. If you do not have a gym membership, you can search for home workout routines on YouTube and find one which meets your physical abilities.

6. Join a group

many community centers offer free classes or groups that you can join. Joining a group can help you mingle with new people. Feeling connected with the community can reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.

7. Do something out of the ordinary

Taking time out of your day to focus on something you don’t typically do can break up the cycle of stress. People often get in a rhythm which is not healthy and continue doing things they do not enjoy because they are afraid of change. Breaking the cycle can take time and effort but start with something small.

8. Eat a good meal

Mental health is more often than not connected to physical health. Your brain cannot function properly without adequate fuel. Try as much as possible to eat healthy when you can. But, every once in a while it is important to eat some good comfort food.

9. Watch a movie you enjoy

sometimes it is a good idea to get some distraction from your stress. Watching a movie you have already seen that you enjoy can improve your mood and offer something else to focus on. Maybe make a game out of things you didn’t notice the first time you saw the movie.

10. Meditate

Meditation can be very helpful in reducing stress. Stress is often increased by a feeling of lack of control. Taking a moment to breath, focus on yourself, and your body can increase feelings of control. Many people have a hard time starting with meditation. Listening music or a guided meditation can be a good way to get started.
